Geometric eye crochet square with stripes and surface slip stitch

The only thing better than crocheting is crocheting with friends. This afghan square pattern is part of the Moogly 2025 CAL. The CAL (crochet along) is a year-long crochet along, featuring 24 afghan squares or blocks, designed by 24 different professional crochet designers. This design is block number 18.

Simple Crochet Stitches

The base of this crochet square is super simple – just double crochet, single crochet, and chain stitch corners.

A New Way to Switch Colors

Typically, you would join at the end of a round by working a slip stitch in the first stitch with the next color. I never liked the way this looked because it would leave a little color “blip” at the change point. My friend Pia told me about a method she likes that gives a much smoother transition. Instead of working a slip stitch to join, you remove the hook from the live loop of yarn, insert your hook from back to front through the first stitch and pull the loop back through to the back of the work. (Check out that link for her photo and video tutorial for this join method.) For this pattern, I called this technique a “modified join”. Give it a try and tell me what you think!

Choosing Yarn Colors

I wanted bright colors for this square. I chose Cascade Pacific yarn in #84 persimmon, #173 sangria, and #13 gold. I love the way these colors really pop.

I fell in love with these colors as I made the square. In fact, I kinda wanted to just keep stitching and make it a whole large square blanket!

Tamara made her square with 5 different colors. I love the blue she chose for the interior – it reminds me of a middle eastern evil eye style design. A crochet design that provides supernatural protection? Yes, please.
