Did you know 3 is not the same as 13? You probably did. I however, made a booboo. I thought this pattern was supposed to go up by March 13th. Nope. It’s supposed to be live March 3rd. I don’t want you to have to wait due to my blunder, so here is the pattern and a rather sad photo of my design. I’ll update this page to make it prettier soon.

I was super excited when my friend Marie, asked me to join Melange Blacket CAL. The CAL (crochet-along) is a year-long crochet along, featuring 48 afghan squares or block. This design is block number 9.

There are so many fun ways to make this square unique. The sage green and cream I used reminded me of vintage textiles. Marie’s version is bright and happy with red, white, and teal.

TIPS & TRICKS

You don’t have to fasten off old colors if you don’t want to, you can loosely bring them up the wrong side of the work to the next round where they are needed.

Round 3 starts with joining the yarn in the center double crochet on any side. Some people join yarn by putting a slip knot on the hook and making a slip stitch in the indicated space. I actually prefer to just insert my hook (with nothing on it) into the space, yarn over with the new yarn, and pull that loop through to the front. In this pattern a cluster is 3 double crochet worked together (sometimes called a dc3tog) into the same space.

The beginning cluster replaces the first leg with a chain 2 to get the yarn up to the right height.

PATTERN NOTES

For a video tutorial on how to make a magic ring, visit https://youtu.be/TpCBLLZjpVU

The chain-3 at the start of a round counts as the first double crochet of the round. Work the next stitch in the second stitch of the previous round.

To join at the end of a round, work a slip stitch in the indicated stitch.

To change yarn colors at the end of a round, work the last slip stitch with the next color as follows: insert hook in indicated stitch, drop old color, yarn over with new color and draw through all loops on hook. The slip stitch is completed, and you now have the color for the next round on your hook. Fasten off the old color.

SPECIAL STITCHES

V-stitch = (Double crochet, chain 1, double crochet) in indicated stitch or space.

Beginning cluster = Chain 2, [yarn over, insert hook, yarn over, pull up a loop, yarn over, draw through 2 loops on hook] twice in indicated stitch (3 loops on hook), yarn over, draw through all 3 loops on hook.

Cluster = [Yarn over, insert hook, yarn over, pull up a loop, yarn over, draw through 2 loops on hook] 3 times in indicated stitch (4 loops on hook), yarn over, draw through all 4 loops on hook.
