The only thing better than crocheting is crocheting with friends. I was super excited when my friend Tamara, from MooglyBlog, asked me to join in the MooglyCAL for 2023. The CAL (crochet along) is a year-long crochet along, featuring 24 afghan squares or blocks, designed by 24 different professional crochet designers. This design is block number 19.

If this is your first time hearing about it, don’t worry. All the patterns for the previous blocks are still available.

Is it a Granny or Isn’t It?

Technically, a granny square is made by using groups of 3 double crochet stitches. According to that definition, this isn’t a true granny square. However, the term “granny square” often gets used to describe any mostly solid crochet afghan square – and this one certainly fits that description.

Choosing Yarn Colors

I wanted soft colors for this square. I chose Caron One Pound yarn in the colors Fig, Azure, and Soft Grey Mix. Tamara made her square using in monotones. It’s amazing how different colors can play together in this square to make such a great combination.

UNDERSTANDING THE STITCH PATTERN

The multi-colored checkerboard look in this pattern is achieved by strategically skipping stitches and working into some stitches 2 rounds below.

PATTERN NOTES

To change yarn colors at the end of a round, work the last slip stitch with the next color as follows: insert hook in indicated stitch, drop old color, yarn over with new color and draw through all loops on hook. The slip stitch is completed and you now have the color for the next round on your hook. Fasten off the old color.

Stitch counts are the number of stitches on each of the 4 sides between the corner chain-2 spaces. Stitch counts do not include chain-2 corner spaces.

To join, work a slip stitch in the indicated stitch.
