The only thing better than crocheting is crocheting with friends. This afghan square pattern is part of the Moogly 2024 CAL. The CAL (crochet along) is a year-long crochet along, featuring 24 afghan squares or blocks, designed by 24 different professional crochet designers. This design is block number 19.
Is it a Granny Square or a Log Cabin Square?
Technically, a granny square is made by using groups of 3 double crochet stitches. This square is a combination of granny square rounds and log-cabin style rounds. Log cabin quilts are made with strips of fabric going around a center square. The two-color rounds form a log-cabin style of quilt, but in crochet.
Choosing Yarn Colors
I wanted autumn colors for this square. I chose Caron One Pound yarn in the colors Truffle, Succulent, and Faded Brick. Tamara made her square using blue, white, and grey. It’s amazing how different colors can play together in this square to make such a great combination.

A Perfect Project For Yarn Scraps
If you’ve been crocheting for very long, you probably have a nice collection of yarn scraps. I did something with my leftover yarn for this square that I think you would enjoy. I made handloom coasters. It’s a lot easier than you might think. I’ll be sharing all the info you need to make your own coasters on my other site, The Lindsey Life. It won’t be available until October 1st, so make sure to sign up for my email newsletter so I can email you once it’s up.

UNDERSTANDING THE STITCH PATTERN
On log cabin rounds (Rounds 4, 6, 7, and 8) you will work a half round with the first color. Then you switch colors, chain 3 (counts as first double crochet in the new color), then double crochet into the side of the last stitch of the previous color and continue to work around. You end by working the last 2 stitches into the side and top of the first stitch of the previous color. The multi-colored checkerboard look in this pattern is achieved by strategically skipping stitches and working into some stitches 2 rounds below.
PATTERN NOTES
To join, work a slip stitch in the indicated stitch.
To change yarn colors in last yarn over of a double crochet: yarn over with current color, insert hook, yarn over with current color, pull up a loop, yarn over with current color, pull through 2 loops on hook, yarn over with new color, pull through 2 loops on hook.
